What the G2 road test evaluates

The test looks at whether you can drive safely in common situations while following Ontario rules. The examiner observes your vehicle control, awareness, communication with other road users and decisions as conditions change.

Observation

Use mirrors, check blind spots and scan intersections. Make head movements clear enough to show that you checked before acting.

Vehicle control

Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly. Maintain an appropriate speed and stable lane position.

Communication

Signal with enough notice, cancel signals after the manoeuvre and respond predictably to signs and traffic.

Judgment

Choose safe gaps, yield when required and adapt to pedestrians, cyclists, weather and road conditions.

Practise these manoeuvres

Before test day

Practise in different traffic and weather conditions with a qualified accompanying driver. Confirm the vehicle is roadworthy, and check the current appointment, identification and vehicle requirements with DriveTest.

A memorized route cannot replace observation and judgment. Examiners may use different roads, and real traffic conditions always change.

During the test

Listen to each instruction and ask for clarification if you did not hear it. Continue driving safely after a small mistake instead of assuming the test is over. The examiner gives directions; you remain responsible for deciding when a manoeuvre is safe.
